Classroom Expectations

Expectations for Sociology Classroom Climate

We affirm the right to academic freedom in our classrooms. This means that instructors and students have the freedom to express a full range of opinions regarding subject matter that is relevant to a given course.

We affirm that faculty and students should refrain from using speech that a reasonable observer would deem as hateful or derogatory. We share the expectation that students and faculty will be intentional about their choice of language with respect to marginalized groups and open to feedback about unintended consequences of their classroom discourse. It is our responsibility to create a learning space that is open to all students.

We affirm that faculty and students should adhere to norms of civility, generosity, and mutual respect in all classroom discussions and interactions.

We recognize that it is the responsibility of each course community to build upon these guidelines to mutual understanding putting them in practice.
