Robert M. Fishman, taught at the University of Notre Dame from 1992 – 2015 where he was a Professor of Sociology and an active member of the Kellogg and Nanovic Institutes. He also taught at Harvard University (1984-1991) and the Carlos III University in Madrid (2015-2025). Fishman earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from Yale University. He is the author of Democratic Practice: Origins of the Iberian Divide in Political Inclusion, Oxford University Press, 2019, which has been translated into Spanish and Portuguese and of other books in English and Spanish. His scholarly articles have been published in World Politics, the American Sociological Review, the Annual Review of Political Science, Politics and Society, Theory and Society, Comparative Politics, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Contributions to Political Economy, Studies in Comparative International Development, South European Society and Politics, and other scholarly journals. He has also published in several newspapers such as El País, The New York Times and Público. Fishman’s research deals with democracy and democratization, culture and cultural change, social movements and inequality, and altruism.
