The Department of Sociology uses several basic procedures for advising undergraduate majors and second majors:
- Each undergraduate major is assigned to a specific faculty advisor who is available for consultation by his or her advisees.

These lists are also posted on the undergraduate advising bulletin board directly outside the entrance to the Department Main Office.
- In addition, all undergraduate majors and second majors are encouraged to meet with the Sociology Department's Director of Undergraduate Studies whenever the need arises.
- A designated "Advising Night," at which all advisors are present, is scheduled once each semester just before the registration period begins. Majors are expected to attend these events for advising on their schedules. Refreshments are provided.
- Once each semester, the department holds an orientation session for undergraduate majors who intend to pursue graduate study in sociology. Interested students are encouraged to work with the Director of Undergraduate Studies and the Department Chair to identify graduate programs that best meet the students' needs.
