The Center for the Study of Religion and Society, headed by Christian Smith, was awarded a $75,000 equipment grant from the University of Notre Dame in order to collect survey data through an innovative methodological approach collecting data through both traditional paper surveys and onsite tablet laptops, minimizing data entry and increasing potential for participation from would-be non-respondents. The technological advances that this grant supports will provide capability to increase survey response rates, specifically limiting systematic response bias cause by lack of phone and internet access, transportation, and difficulties filling out traditional surveys which disproportionately affect underprivileged participants.

Assistant Professors Sean Kelly and Erika Summers-Effler have been approved for reappointment after successful third year reviews.

Maureen T. Hallinan has been elected into the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) newly established Fellows Program, which honors education researchers with exceptional scientific or scholarly contributions. One of the world’s foremost scholars in the sociology of education, Hallinan is Notre Dame’s William P. and Hazel B. White Professor of Sociology and director of the University’s Center for Research on Educational Opportunity. Read full story >

Sean Kelly received a Spencer Foundation Exemplary Dissertation Award at the March 2008 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association in New York City.  The 2008 Award recognizes outstanding dissertations in Education completed from 2003-2006.  Professor Kelly’s dissertation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison is titled “Race, Social Class, Student Engagement, and Unequal Literacy Development in Middle School English Classrooms.”  The Spencer Foundation supports research that gives promise of yielding new knowledge about education in the United States and abroad.

Rory McVeigh and Juliana Sobolewski won the ASA Political Sociology Section Best Paper Award (honorable mention) for their American Journal of Sociology article entitled "Red Counties, Blue Counties, and Occupational Segregation by Sex and Race."

Graduate Students

Jon Hill won the Jeanine Becker Outstanding Graduate Student Paper Award. Jon's paper was entitled "Higher education and change in religious identity and practice."

Xochitl Bada and Jennifer Yonkoski were co-winners of the John J. Kane Memorial Award. This award is presented annually to the department's most outstanding graduate student or students.

Ana Velitchkova's paper "The Role of International Influences and Transnational Social Movements in the Eastern European Transitions of 1989," earned her a place at the Marie Curie Conference and Workshop Series 'summer school' workshop in Prague in summer 2008. The Marie Curie Series is funded by the EU, and brings together scholars from several leading universities in Europe to support interdisciplinary training for researchers on European protest movements since 1945.

Undergraduate Majors

Emily Cooperstein is the winner of the 2008 Margaret Eisch Memorial Award. The Eisch Award is given each year to the outstanding graduating senior majoring in Sociology.  The Eisch family established the award in memory of their daughter Margaret, a Notre Dame Sociology major who died in 1976.

Kathleen Daley is the winner of the 2008 Sociology Senior Essay Award.  This award is given each year for the best essay or research paper submitted by a graduating senior or seniors on a topic of sociological relevance.  Kathleen's paper was entitled " Woman for Sale!  Get your Women for Sale!"

Amanda Bradley, Emily Cooperstein, Elizabeth Ferrufino, Valerie Garcia, Katie Miller, Anthony Salpino, Carolyn Sarb, Kimmy Tavarez, and Sarah Van Mill have successfully completed the Sociology Capstone Project.

Paul Magro has accepted a tenure track Assistant Professor position at Ball State University beginning in Fall 2008.
