Profile

Michael Tormey came to Notre Dame from SUNY-Buffalo, where he earned his Master's (with a focus on Marriage and Family) in the department of Sociology. His thesis, A Comparative Study of Online Dating Preferences Among Gays, Lesbians, and Heterosexuals", explored the level of disclosure and preferences of online dating site users. Before coming to Notre Dame, he was an adjunct instructor in the department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work at Eastern Connecticut State University, as well as in the department of Sociology and Anthropology at Asnuntuck Community College. While at Notre Dame, he has served as a teaching assistant for Statistics.

Michael's interests include Family, Gender, Culture and Technology, Criminology, Qualitative Methods, and Statistics. Recently, he co-authored an entry in The Encyclopedia of Human Relationships, "Fields of Eligibles and Availables". Currently, he is also pursuing accreditation in the department of Gender Studies and is working on research that explores opportunities for methodological and theoretical collaboration between the humanities and social sciences.
