Dr. Bustamante was the founder and first President of El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, the prominent Mexican institute for the study of border issues. He is the author of more than 200 scholarly publications on the Sociology of the border region between the United States and Mexico and Central American immigrants to the United States. Dr. Bustamante is a leading participant in international scholarly networks dealing with these themes and has played a major role in building and sustaining scholarly linkages between Mexico and the United States.
He was the recipient of the 2007 Cox-Johnson-Frazier Award. This is the highest award granted by the American Sociological Association. He continues being a faculty member of the University of Notre Dame.
