Profile
Specializing in the sociology of religion, Christian Smith joined the Notre Dame faculty in fall 2006, coming from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served as the Stuart Chapin Distinguished Professor of Sociology. He is the author of several books, including Moral, Believing Animals: Human Personhood and Culture (Oxford University Press, 2003) and Christian America? What Evangelicals Really Want (University of California Press, 2000). Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers received a 2006 book award from Christianity Today magazine. Smith earned his doctoral and master’s degrees from Harvard University.
