Profile
Rory joined the Sociology Department in the fall of 2002 after teaching for five years at Skidmore College. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina in 1996. His research examines macrostructural influences on political mobilization and on the formation of political interests. He recently completed a book titled The Rise of the Ku Klux Klan: Right-Wing Movements and National Politics and has published numerous articles in sociology's premier journals. These articles address a wide range of substantive topics including racist activism, structural influences on activism and crime, hate crime, and the effects of occupational segregation on party voting. Current projects include a study of voting on same-sex marriage amendments, an analysis of the long-term political consequences of Klan mobilization in the 1960s, and a new book about the United Farm Workers movement.
